Pump me up

At the November 27th 09, DIVEGAN installed a new oxygen/helium booster pump, a very well running booster from Manfred Fuehrmann, www.tecserv.org
Some data’s: weight 21 kg. Pneumatic 2-10 bar filtered oil free compressed air.
Transmission ratio: 1:30, compression ratio:1:20. Gas inlet: 15 bar min. Gas outlet: 300 bar max. its an optimal solution for the Maldives, because oxygen and helium only to max. 130 bar available.
Hans Bohn from Tauchservice Seegeist, Bad Wiessee, Bavaria, www.nesy.net
retool the booster with special adaptors to make sure that the booster pump is connecting well to the supply cylinders.

Finally Decompression Chamber Facility for the Addu Atoll

As from now, divers in Addu Atoll have access to a decompression chamber on Vilingili Island (in the Shangri La Resort) for diving accidents. The chamber is operating on a 24 hour basis and can be contacted via emergency hotline. The doctors in charge, Mrs. Rokya Camara and Mr. Michael Miller, are also dealing with non diving related medical emergencies. Both are not new to the Maldives, having operated the Kuramathi decompression facility before.

In this context, it is important to stress once more, that the treatment of diving related accidents (decompression accidents) is not covered by the normal health insurance. It is important to get cover for such treatment by an explicit additional diving insurance which can be obtained for expample with Divers Alert Network (DAN) before the holiday. This can evern be done via internet. (www.daneurope.org)

Shark ban to become effective in 2010

The export of all shark produced will officially be banned in March 2010, according to the ministry of fisheries.

Fisheries Minister Dr Ibrahim Didi said the income generated from tourism was five times higher than the money from shark product exports.

In addition, studies reveal that shark populations in the Maldives are at risk of extinction.
